Mr Williams:

I have been asked to speak to you today to represent the international staff of Bacui School. I have only been in Bacui, and Beijing, for 3 months now and I have to say I have really appreciated the warm welcome I have had. I have moved around a lot in my short life and I know how difficult new starts can be; it is always made easier when surrounded by positivity, so thank you.

When I was asked to do this speech, I was told it should be motivational and my first thought was, ‘How on earth do I do that?’ Do I stand up here and copy Martin Luther King with his ‘I have a dream’ speech? But it wasn’t quite fitting. So after a lot of coffee and cheesecake and thinking it came down to what motivates me, what inspires me. The answer was simple: it’s people I look up to. More specifically at the moment it’s one person I look up to, she is my old drama teacher by the name of Anna Scher. This woman is an outstanding role model, who I aspire to be like everyday; although, I never fully succeed. Anna Scher is the most wonderful lady I have ever met. She is kind beyond compare, extremely positive but above all she is intelligent, determined and insightful. So much so she was recently honoured by the Queen of England for her work with the arts and international charity aid.

Now the reason I’m sharing this with you is because Anna has some little mottos which help to motivate her and her students to success. I want to share these with you now. The first is ‘Inch by inch life is a sinch, yard by yard it’s very hard’. Basically, little by little is the way to success, a task is easier in small chunks so try to learn day by day to improve rather than trying to do it all at once.

The second I want to share is ‘Proper preparation prevents poor performance’. You wouldn’t expect an Olympic athlete to sit on a couch all day eating a bucket of KFC, then turn up at Rio and get gold. They train hard everyday just to shave 0.1 second off the best time.

To finish I suggest you pick a role model to aspire to be like. Someone who you know works hard, has a good heart and who makes a difference in some way, shape or form. This could be an athlete, a family member or even a classmate. Then everyday think of that person and what small thing you can to be more like them, to improve your life and the lives of your brothers and sisters here at Bacui. Think, what have you done today to make you feel proud? Try to do just one small thing, remember inch by inch.

Thank you.

Dear colleagues and students,

My name is Lily. I am an English teacher in DCP Primary 1 and Primary 5. As a new teacher, I have been working in our school for nearly three months. It’s not a very long time. But, I have already got a strong sense of belonging here. That sense of belonging comes from the joyful atmosphere created by all the teachers. It also comes from the love given by my dear students.

I have 18 students in total. Today, I want to talk about one kid in my DCP class. He tends to go around in the class without permission. He always draws by himself without paying attention to teachers. He likes to interrupt teachers by shouting random words. I wonder what you think of this kid and how you would deal with him. I used to think I was a patient person and hardly lost my temper. However, I could be very angry and easily lose my patience when he has those behaviors mentioned above. Sometimes, I just could not help thinking “Can I give up him?”

Before I tell you my answer, there is another picture I want to show you about him. You can see a desperate face when he doesn’t know the answers. Tears come out of his eyes when nobody wants to play with him. When he draws, the outside world doesn’t exist. He immerses himself in the world full of imagination and joy.

Now, let’s answer the question I mentioned earlier “Can I give up him?” I believe you have the same answer as mine. “No.” How could I ever give up a child who is eager to show himself, to share with others, to be part of his team and could be very talented artist in the future?

He, like any of you, is special and unique. No matter you are 6 or 16, you all have your own talents or passion. You may not always be a good student. You do not always get high marks or you always get low in exams. Sometimes, you couldn’t help sleeping in classes. Sometimes, you just do not want to do your homework. What I am trying to say is that no matter what improper behaviors you have as a student, don’t let them stop you from finding your talents or passion. Don’t be blind for what you could achieve in the future. Stop complaining about your teachers or parents. They cannot force you to become someone. You are the only one who can become the one you really dream of.

There are always challenges waiting for us. But we shouldn’t be afraid. Because I know we are not by ourselves. We are parts of our big family, BBBS. We, teachers and students will work together to make things happen.

Thank you!
